The Future of Closures App — What's Coming in 2026

Posted on January 6, 2026Updates

It's been over a decade since Closures App first launched as a simple side project in 2013. What started as a way to check if school was cancelled has grown into something used by families, teachers, and employers across the country.

But we're just getting started.

2026 marks the biggest evolution of Closures App yet. Here's a glimpse at what's coming.

  • Nationwide Coverage — Every County, Every State: We're going all in. Our goal is complete coverage of all 210 media markets in the United States. No more gray counties. No more "not available in your area." If there's a closing, you'll know about it.
  • A Smarter Closures App: We're introducing AI-powered status understanding. No more confusing announcements like "2-hour delay AM kindergarten only" — Closures App will break it down for you in plain English and tell you exactly what it means for your schedule.
  • Introducing the Closures App iOS App: This one's been a long time coming. For the first time ever, Closures App is coming to the App Store as a fully native iOS app. This is brand new territory for us, and we couldn't be more excited to finally bring Closures App to your pocket. Push notifications will let you get alerted the moment your kid's school posts a delay. No more refreshing. No more guessing. No account required — just pick what you want to watch, and we'll handle the rest.
  • A Fresh New Look: New logo. New design. New everything. We're giving Closures App a modern identity that matches the reliability you've come to expect.
  • Beyond Weather: Snow days aren't the only reason things close. We're expanding to cover emergency closures, power outages, and unexpected events — giving you a single source of truth for "is this place open today?"

To everyone who's used Closures App over the years — thank you. Your feedback, your patience during outages, and your support have kept this project alive.

2026 is going to be a big year. Stay tuned.
